Lucy has a sister

March 24, 2012

After a year of settling into our new place, we finally fulfilled the promise to Lucy to get her a sister.

She came to us through the wonderful volunteers of Come Bye Border Collie Rescue. The process took some time including a road trip to Springfield, IL to meet her. After a successful introduction to Lucy, we are now a two dog household. All we know about her past is that she was found in Texas, she is about a year old and she looks like a half-sized Lucy. Their markings are almost identical. She came to us with the name Lily, but we’re not yet sure if that will stick. We really want to know her true personality (dog-on-ality?) before committing to a name. Our goofy girl Lucy would have been named Willow if we went with our first impressions. Lucy is definitely not a Willow. The new girl has had it pretty rough in her short life. She is afraid of just about everything, especially people, men in particular and kids, and loud cars. She’s been with us about a month now and she is already coming along. We are slowly introducing her to new things to help her get more comfortable in the world. The biggest tool in our arsenal is Lucy. This scared little dog LOVES Lucy. When she is afraid or nervous, she sticks close to Lucy and can be brave. It will take patience, but she is such a sweet girl, we will enjoy getting to know the real her.

They both love to look our over the neighborhood from their perch at the top of the stairs

She’s smart. She learn to climb the spiral stair case by watching Lucy. It only took her a couple days. Parts of her personality are already starting to surface.

We discovered that she likes to chew things

We’ve been collecting cardboard tubes, with the help from friends and family, as things she’s allowed to chew on.

I've thought about calling her Fuzzball the Destructor.

It is amazing how much fun she has shredding stuff.

All that destruction is exhausting

One of our frequently used cleaning implements is now a rake.

She also really likes golf balls. In our concrete house, they bounce and skitter around, and she jumps, skids and pounces after them. It makes us smile. A lot of people have asked what Lucy thinks of the new addition. Just the other day, Lucy was snoozing on the couch. Lily was going wild with a golf ball, making a racket bouncing it off the walls, the furniture, the metal stair. Lucy got off the couch, took away the golf ball and went back to sleeping on the couch. There are moments like that where Lucy misses her undisturbed naps, when she’s not happy to share toys and especially when she thinks the new kid is getting too much of our attention. Most of the time, though, they hang out together. Lily has lured the old girl into playing on a few occasions.

We think they are good for each other
