For the years I’ve driven across the state on Interstate 70, this stand-out little building in the open space between St. Louis and Columbia has caught my attention. As I learned more about Bell buildings and Irvin R. Timlin’s designs, I suspected that this was a phone building. This past week, that was confirmed.

Our office has a client in Wright City. I was there for a bid opening on Friday and finally was in a place where there was someone to ask about this building. They confirmed that it was originally a telephone building. They had looked at it when it was last for sale. It was too big of a project for them but, fortunately, a Bank took it on and restored and re-purposed it. With a little digging, This site with a lot more information about its history. A Repeater Station represents an important, though short, time in communication history. They were the first steps at improving and simplifying long distance calling. Besides its place in phone history, it is an attractive, well-crafted building, like many of the early Bell designs.

It is encouraging to see an institution valuing the character of an historic building and going to extended measures to preserve and restore it.  If a financial institution can see the importance of preserving our past, it is surprising that other institutions still don’t.

I think I remember seeing another repeater station in a field just next to I-70, with a cell tower right beside it. Not sure where it was, some place between KC and StL.

Yes- I’ve noticed that too- a small brick building. I’ll see what I can find out about it.

Sandy and I just drove past the Bank today on our way to Colorado. I thought that the building looked like an old telephone sub station. I thought of you guys. Fantastic building. Darrel
