Our Big Ass Building is 100 years old today!

This photo is captioned as 'ORIG. BLDG. BUILT 1914' but Tom found some other information that points to the date 100 years ago.

This photo is captioned as ‘ORIG. BLDG. BUILT 1914’ but Tom found some other information that points to the date 100 years ago, today.

The building was under construction in 1914, with the telephone functions operational on June 21, 1915. It must take quite a bit of time to get the wiring and gear installed.

Tom got this document from the archives at Southwestern Bell.

Tom got this document, dated January 1, 1934, from the archives at Southwestern Bell.

At about the middle of the page, it says ‘On June 21, 1915, the office was moved to a new two story brick building at Colorado and Wilmington Avenues.’

On another part of this document, it lists the original personnel assigned to this office:

  • Mr. A.J. O’Neill, Manager
  • Miss Lulu Miller, Chief Operator
  • Mr. Charles Brandle, Wire Chief
  • Mr. Geo. Hutchinson, Wire Chief
  • Mr. Lynford Tweedle, Wire Chief
  • Mr. Joe J. Mason, Traffic Chief
  • Miss Clara Hample, Chief Operator

Cheers BAB! Here’s to a hundred more. Hopefully, the roof will be fixed by then.

Happy 100th Birthday BAB! Great to see an original image and description file- love the history of the place. Are those exterior curtains/mini-awnings I see in the image?!?

There must have been awnings on the west side. No sign of them now.
