Going Higher

January 31, 2016

This weekend we did a short presentation about the B.A.B. to kick off the WU Spring Alberti Program. We’ve been participating in the program since its inception. We enjoy seeing the kids, some we’ve seen grow-up over the years, mixed in with the fresh faces. We talk about our projects, what we’ve learned, and how we like to make things. The kids come up with some terrific, truly unique ideas.

This time we got to show our roof project and imagine the possibilities. We had talked with the students at the Fall session about our ideas about the roof garden. This time, Ms. Gay asked us to talk about something that could help the kids to think about designing in section instead of in plan. Tom and I have always talked about extending the back stair up to the roof. We started thinking- why stop there?

In architecture history, there are many examples of reaching higher.

When we go on vacation, we often find a high spot to get a sense of the area.

Sometimes the view is straight down!

So we started thinking of using the stair we need to build to create something more- our own tower! It will be a way for us to get above our tall parapet to see the Arch, take in all of the area fireworks, for bird watching, who knows?

We showed some examples of towers that appeal to us.

Remember the movie “Stairway To Heaven”? Are you aiming for that? That last one was creepy. It is so good what you do with the kids. Maybe future employees? Good luck 🍀 Love, Mom

I don’t know that movie, but by the look at the movie poster, that might be setting our sights too high- even for us!
